FRIDAY TRAINING

FRIDAY, 23 NOVEMBER 2012

With Greg out of town and the UF-FSU game looming on the horizon on Saturday, I moved our practice time from Saturday to Friday afternoon.

All three blue belts (David S., Jason C., and Ethan E.) showed up.  Strangely, Jason C. beat me to the academy (I was on time, though).  This is strange simply because Mr. C. usually has difficulty being on time.  I guess we know that the 2012 apocalypse is close at hand when he starts coming to classes on time.

We went over a new leg drag guard pass that focuses on how to kill guard replacement attempts, and we focused on a couple of leg-lasso sweeps when the opponent is standing.  I started working on a method of slowing down the knee slide pass, but elected to wait until Wednesday since we had drilled the above techniques for over an hour.

In the end, I suppose it was worth it since UF fans got to witness a victory over FSU (37-26).

WOLFPACK BJJ TUSCALOOSA = NEW BLUE BELTS

TUESDAY, 20 NOVEMBER 2012

Wolfpack BJJ Tuscaloosa promoted a few people to blue belt on Tuesday, 20 November.  Welcome to the colored belt rankings of BJJ, where the learning never stops!

MICHAEL S. = JUDO BLACK BELT

Michael S., aka "Muay Thai Mike," received his judo black belt from Omar M. this past week.  I send out congratulations to him on his judo efforts since those of us who are practicing judo at present are hoping to reach that rank one day.  I have to admit that a black belt on a white gi looks cool.

ROLLING SESSION

MONDAY, 19 NOVEMBER 2012

Monday's class was a pre-emptive class, scheduled in anticipation of cancelling Wednesday night's class so I can attend the Thanksgiving Eve service at church.

It was just me, David S., and Jason C. in attendance.  The "class" consisted of the three of us switching out for rolling sessions and discussing methodology of guard passing.

FULL HOUSE TONIGHT

SATURDAY, 17 NOVEMBER 2012

It was a full house for BJJ and judo tonight.

All of my colored belts showed up tonight.  We went over half-guard passes and, just to keep it interesting for those trying to pass half guard, defenses to half-guard passes.  I rolled with Nick N. and promoted him to 4-stripes on his purple belt.  I also put a second stripe on Ethan E.'s blue belt (long overdue).

We had eight people for judo tonight, including a visitor from Texas named Justin (yonkyu).  We went over o-soto-otoshi (big outer body drop).  It is very similar to o-soto-gari, but I think it will hurt the opponent much more.

ANOTHER SMALL SATURDAY CLASS

SATURDAY, 10 NOVEMBER 2012

For BJJ, it was just me and David S. in attendance.  He got what amounted to a free private lesson consisting of live rolling/trouble shooting.

In judo, Daniel A. showed up, so we had even numbers.  We worked ashi-waza again, along with o-uchi-gari and ko-uchi-gari.

THE ORIGINAL CREW SHOWED UP.

WEDNESDAY, 07 NOVEMBER 2012

The original group of guys representing OP Wolfpack BJJ was in full force tonight.  We had a 3-stripe purple (Nick N.), a 4-stripe blue (David S.), a 3-stripe blue (Jason C.), and a 1-stripe blue (Ethan E.).  Unfortunately, I made uneven numbers.

We had a visitor drop in to watch (Steve B., a member of my church who I am currently lifting weights with).

It was an eclectic class tonight, consisting of question-answer, trouble shooting, and some live rolling.
