SATURDAY NIGHT

SATURDAY, 22 DECEMBER 2012

In BJJ tonight, it was just me and Jason.  I taught and drilled a follow-up De la Riva sweep, a way to take the back from the opponent's turtle, and an escape from the back.  I rolled with Jason for about 5 minutes.

In judo, we covered o-soto-gari again, and we went through harai-goshi, tai otoshi, and o-goshi when we get "weird" grips and cannot finish in textbook manner.  Greg, Jason, and I randoried.  All in all, it was a good technique class.

TUESDAY TRAINING AT SMILEY'S

TUESDAY, 18 DECEMBER 2012

I moved Wednesday's class to Tuesday evening so I could attend the last Advent dinner and service at my church.  My family was out of town attending a Christmas program for a niece, so there was time to train on Tuesday.

It was a simple session with me and Jason.  He and I did dozens of repetitions on three De la Riva sweeps, and then did live rolling for about 30 minutes to finish the session.  I think it went well, and things like this will help get Jason closer to purple belt.

NEW IJF RULES

SATURDAY, 15 DECEMBER 2012

BJJ consisted of me and Jason; judo was upped to three with the addition of Greg.

We went over the proposed rule changes regarding breaking grips placed forward by the IJF (meaning that they are going through) and spent time working on o-soto-gari.

I taught a loop choke from standing in someone's guard in both BJJ and judo.  Otherwise, it was a fairly slow evening.

NICK AND JACQUI ARE NOW MARRIED

Nicholas N. and Jacqui Z. are now Mr. and Mrs. N.  The two were married on Friday, 14 December 2012 in Gainesville, FL.  I was honored to be the best man in the wedding.  In addition, through Charles Dos Anjos, I was able to promote Nick to brown belt in BJJ at the reception.  For once, I caught him off guard.

Our judo coach, Greg DiFranza, was the officiant for the wedding.  Our teammates, Jason C. and Ethan E., were groomsmen in the wedding, too.

We at Orange Park Wolfpack BJJ/First Coast Kodokan Judo wish the two of them the best on this exciting time in their lives.

NO WEDNESDAY PRACTICE

WEDNESDAY, 12 DECEMBER 2012

Brace yourselves: today was 12/12/12.

I cancelled class today because Jason cancelled on me, and I decided not to hold class for one person.  In addition, even if it had been full attendance, there would have been no live rolling since Nick's wedding is on Friday and three of us (me, Jason, Ethan) are in the wedding.

On a side note, this is the 100th posting on this blog.  Kudos to me!

SATURDAY VISITORS

SATURDAY, 8 DECEMBER 2012

Kenny F., a student at Jim Smiley's Combat Athletix, dropped in to watch my BJJ class tonight.  Since he is suffering from a hernia, he did not actively participate, but he did ask questions and help move class forward.  Class consisted of me rolling with Ethan until Jason showed up (50 minutes late).

For judo, Michael S., the newly promoted black belt, came in and helped us move along.  We practiced o-uchi-gari to o-soto-gari tonight, and had our usual randori session at the end (Mike and I randoried, and then Ethan and I randoried).  All-in-all, it was a good practice without egos.

NO TRAINING ON SATURDAY

Saturday, 1 December 2012

All of the BJJ people canceled on me in various forms prior to Saturday's class, so I obviously did not have a BJJ class.  Judo training with Greg was also canceled.
