SATURDAY, 23 NOVEMBER 2013

23 November 2013

We held a mixed BJJ/judo/MMA class on Saturday from 2:45 until 5:45 since Greg was out of town.  It is nice to tie together takedowns, grappling, and strikes...all with the gi...and see what we can learn along the way.

OH YEAH....NEW LOCATION

28 NOVEMBER 2013

Since I have been so bad in posting things, I forgot to mention that we have moved our location since AFR Christian Karate departed from their location to make way for Panera Bread.

Our new location is at First Assembly of God Orange Park.  The address:

1324 Kinglsey Avenue
Orange Park, FL 32073.

We have the entire upstairs of the gym, in an area that was once a private Christian school.

ALABAMA TRIP: 10 OCTOBER - 13 OCTOBER

I made a trip up my northern command post, aka McCalla, AL, to train with Matt Hobson and his crew for four days back in October.  I have been a bit slow in posting.

While there, we got in over 17 hours of training, and I even taught three group classes (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday).  We were able to review and even offer modifications of techniques in the syllabus that he uses to teach from.

While there, I also added two stripes to Matt's purple belt.

JASON COMPTON IS NOW A BJJ PURPLE BELT

SATURDAY, 10 AUGUST 2013

Jason Compton earned his purple belt after nearly five years of practice with me. I would say congratulations, but he has now entered the part of the BJJ game that is the most difficult. He will be targeted by white and blue belts, and brown and black belts will give him no quarter. It is a difficult transition mentally and physically since the speed of the game changes forever.

ETHAN'S RETURN

SATURDAY, 6 JULY 2013

After completing boot camp in Great Lakes, IL (I lived there from 1984-1986) and "A" school in Pensacola, FL (nope, never been there), Ethan returned to Orange Park and got some training in with us before reporting to Newport News/Norfolk.

LESSON 37 AT SMILEY'S

WEDNESDAY, 3 JULY 2013

Today's class consisted of defending punches from an opponent inside the guard and defenses against the arm-triangle (mount and side control).  There were 6 students in attendance, including Nick!

TUESDAY JUDO AT SMILEY'S

TUESDAY, 2 JULY 2013

We had a good turnout today with eight students.

I started the class on the ground and covered the basic baseball bat choke from knee-on-belly.  I also showed two defenses to this choke.  In addition, I showed a very unorthodox way of doing the baseball bat choke from the bottom (and the defense).

After transitioning to standing, we practiced o-soto-gari, ippon-seio-nage, and tai-otoshi.
