WEDNESDAY CLASS IS REMOVED

After seeing the number of students drop over the past year, and having a desire to train myself more, I am no longer having a Wednesday evening BJJ class.

As I tell everyone, I never intended to become an academy instructor.  I was pleased to train with a partner or two and focus on making myself better while traveling to train with Charles on occasion.  In October 2008, a former training partner of mine who had recently been given a purple belt convinced me to begin teaching at First Coast Full Contact in order to prevent his boxing coach, who was firm about offering "grappling" at their new school, from hiring a BJJ fraud.  My intention before then was to meld into Jim Smiley's class as a purple belt (he and another man, Carlos V., were purple belts at that time) and get better with their help.  For my former training partner's sake, and with the understanding that he was going to be in attendance at each class and train with me outside of class, I agreed.

Four years later, I can say that I am glad that I met and took a few students from there with me, but the business environment at that location was not to my liking.  My former training partner bailed very quickly, leaving me to deal with the management, which I will call "skeevy" at best regarding the amount of money owed to me each month.  Regardless, I departed from there in December 2009, and they immediately hired the fraud that my former training partner had been so vociferous about keeping out of there.

The problem with teaching in an academy is that the instructor does not get the repetitions and roll time against higher ranks that he needs in order to maintain his skills and get better.  Now, it is true that I have been promoted twice since operating an academy (brown in February 2009, and black in October 2012), and the three blue belts I have promoted greatly improved my teaching ability and comprehension of basic techniques, and they have taught me much along the way in terms of how people learn.  If I had been training with higher ranking people, as I originally planned when I wished to meld into Smiley's class in 2008, I believe that the black belt would have been earned much faster since I would have focused more on my own training than on teaching my students.

My current goal is to earn a black belt in judo from Greg DiFranza.  I will need time to drill techniques and practice against those who have the ability to beat me and exploit the flaws in my game in BJJ.  Nader Snober has been extremely kind to me over the years, and I have to admit that he has helped me earn the belt that I currently wear.  Nader, in fact, has offered to teach me, regardless of my belt rank, and I feel that I need to take him up on this opportunity since he has made me better each time I have practiced with him.  His knowledge of the game is top notch, and I respect his insight.  Jim Smiley has, and continues to maintain, an open door policy with me in regards to training.  His assistance in my journey has been wonderful, and I am extremely grateful for his friendship.

CHRISTMAS EVE PRACTICE

MONDAY, 24 DECEMBER 2012

I held a practice session on Monday morning, Christmas Eve, for Jason C. and Ethan E.  In addition, Mitch and Mayra B. attended the class.  They are the son-in-law and daughter, respectively, of Joe & Anita O. from my church.  Mitch is a blue belt who trains in Texas; he recently convinced his wife to join him on the mats.

I went over three De la Riva sweeps and two methods of escaping from the back before rolling with Mitch.  Luckily, I kept him at bay and managed to avoid getting beaten in front of my students.

Thanks Mitch and Mayra for coming out!  Good luck as you continue your journey in BJJ.

SATURDAY NIGHT

SATURDAY, 22 DECEMBER 2012

In BJJ tonight, it was just me and Jason.  I taught and drilled a follow-up De la Riva sweep, a way to take the back from the opponent's turtle, and an escape from the back.  I rolled with Jason for about 5 minutes.

In judo, we covered o-soto-gari again, and we went through harai-goshi, tai otoshi, and o-goshi when we get "weird" grips and cannot finish in textbook manner.  Greg, Jason, and I randoried.  All in all, it was a good technique class.

TUESDAY TRAINING AT SMILEY'S

TUESDAY, 18 DECEMBER 2012

I moved Wednesday's class to Tuesday evening so I could attend the last Advent dinner and service at my church.  My family was out of town attending a Christmas program for a niece, so there was time to train on Tuesday.

It was a simple session with me and Jason.  He and I did dozens of repetitions on three De la Riva sweeps, and then did live rolling for about 30 minutes to finish the session.  I think it went well, and things like this will help get Jason closer to purple belt.

NEW IJF RULES

SATURDAY, 15 DECEMBER 2012

BJJ consisted of me and Jason; judo was upped to three with the addition of Greg.

We went over the proposed rule changes regarding breaking grips placed forward by the IJF (meaning that they are going through) and spent time working on o-soto-gari.

I taught a loop choke from standing in someone's guard in both BJJ and judo.  Otherwise, it was a fairly slow evening.

NICK AND JACQUI ARE NOW MARRIED

Nicholas N. and Jacqui Z. are now Mr. and Mrs. N.  The two were married on Friday, 14 December 2012 in Gainesville, FL.  I was honored to be the best man in the wedding.  In addition, through Charles Dos Anjos, I was able to promote Nick to brown belt in BJJ at the reception.  For once, I caught him off guard.

Our judo coach, Greg DiFranza, was the officiant for the wedding.  Our teammates, Jason C. and Ethan E., were groomsmen in the wedding, too.

We at Orange Park Wolfpack BJJ/First Coast Kodokan Judo wish the two of them the best on this exciting time in their lives.

NO WEDNESDAY PRACTICE

WEDNESDAY, 12 DECEMBER 2012

Brace yourselves: today was 12/12/12.

I cancelled class today because Jason cancelled on me, and I decided not to hold class for one person.  In addition, even if it had been full attendance, there would have been no live rolling since Nick's wedding is on Friday and three of us (me, Jason, Ethan) are in the wedding.

On a side note, this is the 100th posting on this blog.  Kudos to me!

SATURDAY VISITORS

SATURDAY, 8 DECEMBER 2012

Kenny F., a student at Jim Smiley's Combat Athletix, dropped in to watch my BJJ class tonight.  Since he is suffering from a hernia, he did not actively participate, but he did ask questions and help move class forward.  Class consisted of me rolling with Ethan until Jason showed up (50 minutes late).

For judo, Michael S., the newly promoted black belt, came in and helped us move along.  We practiced o-uchi-gari to o-soto-gari tonight, and had our usual randori session at the end (Mike and I randoried, and then Ethan and I randoried).  All-in-all, it was a good practice without egos.

NO TRAINING ON SATURDAY

Saturday, 1 December 2012

All of the BJJ people canceled on me in various forms prior to Saturday's class, so I obviously did not have a BJJ class.  Judo training with Greg was also canceled.
