GRAND MASTER CARLSON'S MOTIVATION

SATURDAY, 16 DECEMBER 2017

Today's class had me, Jason (brown belt), John (purple belt), Steve (white belt), and Nicole (white belt). We were short one blue belt from having a "rainbow of belts" in the academy today.

Today's class focused on three techniques from the half-guard. The first technique was a sweep when we get the underhook and the opponent overhooks the arm. The second dealt is a follow-up of the first technique when the opponent takes their arm out and posts when the sweep starts; the response it to take the opponent's back. The third technique occurs when the opponent sits back and presses the hip; we turned this into a modified kimura.

Ryan (purple belt) missed due to taking his father to the ER for kidney & liver complications.

Following the technique session, I rolled with Steve & John.

WEDNESDAY, 13 DECEMBER 2017

Tonight's class was just me, Ryan, & Nicole.

I taught a side control escape series (opponent has underhook and arm behind head). The options given were to belly out, take the back, or pull guard.

Saturday, December 9, 2017

SATURDAY, 09 DECEMBER 2017

Today's class was really, really small. It was me, John, and Steve.

We covered two half-guard sweeps and one full guard recovery from the same basic body positioning in order to get practice on the initial set-up (which is the same for all three techniques). We also went over two defenses to a knee-slide pass that result in taking the opponent's back.

As always, we rolled at the end of class and then handed over the floor to AFR Christian Karate (appeared to be a grading).

BLACK FRIDAY TRAINING

Today was a training session that had me, John, Steve, and another deputy, Vic M. (BJJ purple belt). All we did was roll, though I did coach John on a triangle escape.

Saturday, November 11, 2017

SATURDAY, 11 NOVEMBER 2017

This morning's class consisted of me, Tommy, Steve, and a new to me CCSO deputy, Matt B.

The flavor of the day was back escapes. I went over three, and also covered an additional bow-and-arrow choke defense.

Due to the small class, we were able to roll with all class participants.

Monday, October 16, 2017

SATURDAY, 14 OCTOBER 2017

Today's class consisted of me, Tommy, & Steve. Steve ran slightly late, so Tommy and I warmed up by rolling with each other.

I focused on the "Fat Boy Mount" today. I taught two gi chokes and two applications of arm bars (one with the gi and one without).

Following the drill session, Steve & Tommy rolled, then Steve & I rolled.

Tuesday, October 3, 2017

SATURDAY, 30 SEPTEMBER 2017

Today's class had just me, John, and Tommy.

I taught my kimura and americana sequences from the guard, along with how to do a reverse arm bar in case an opponent defends the Americana. We worked on disrupting the opponent's posture, as well.

We then moved on to the feet, where we worked on double leg takedowns and single leg takedowns before practicing ko-uchi-gari on the crash pad. John and I spent some time working on tie-ups and defenses from there.

Monday, September 25, 2017

SATURDAY, 23 SEPTEMBER 2017

Saturday's class had me, Ryan, Tommy, Steve, and Josh H.

The flavor of the day was arm bars and sweeps.

I taught the traditional cross arm bar from guard. We moved on from there and performed a same side arm bar from guard. Because a potential finish from that position included the flower sweep, we went over the flower sweep. Lastly, we went over a back take from guard. As always, we rolled to finish off the class.

Monday, September 4, 2017

SATURDAY, 02 SEPTEMBER 2017

Today's class had me, John, Mike, Steve, & Nicole.

We went over two standing headlock escapes, one arms free bearhug from the back escape, and three variations of the americana from side control.

Saturday, August 5, 2017

SATURDAY, 5 AUGUST 2017

Today's class had me, Nick, Jason, John, Mike, and Steve.

I went over three half-guard sweeps and two takedowns.

SATURDAY, 29 JULY 2017

Today's class had me, Nick, Jason, Ryan, Mike, & Steve.

Straight foot-locks, heel-hooks, defenses, and entries into those techniques were covered in the class.

Friday, July 28, 2017

SATURDAY, 22 JULY 2017 (EVENING CLASS)

Tonight's class had me, Jason, and Ryan.

Wrestling take downs were the techniques of choice, with several items that they have not seen being the techniques of the day.

Due to continued injury, Jason did not live roll, so Ryan and I did for about 30 minutes. I had Ryan start on my back 9 or 10 times so I could get practice escaping and defending such a disastrous position.

SATURDAY, 22 JULY 2017 (MORNING CLASS)

This morning's class had me, John, Tommy, Jordon, and Steve.

Dealing with being in half-guard was the flavor of the day. We covered several different methods for defending and passing the half-guard.

Sunday, July 16, 2017

SATURDAY, 15 JULY 2017

Today's class had me, Jason, John, Steve, and Mike M., who returned after a five-year hiatus.

We covered the bread-cutter choke and cross-collar choke from the guard, along with slight variations.

As always, ample roll time was provided.

Monday, June 12, 2017

SUNDAY, 11 JUNE 2017

Today was just a training session with me and Jason.

It was no-gi for takedowns. I showed a few defenses to common takedowns, focusing on a defense to the double leg. We reviewed something I showed him after class on Saturday, and then we rolled for at least an hour.

SATURDAY, 10 JUNE 2017

Today's class had me, Jason (brown belt), Rebecca (blue belt), and Tommy (white belt).

We covered a variety of topics, though I did spend time helping Rebecca refine the cross-collar choke from full-mount and a follow-up arm bar from mount in case of a defense to the initial choke due to the upcoming AGF tournament on July 1.

I added a stripe (the second) to Tommy's white belt today.

Saturday, May 20, 2017

SATURDAY, 20 MAY 2017

Today's class had me, Jason, Ryan, Rebecca, and Tommy.

We went over four mount escapes (foot lift, foot drag, high bridge, and foot grab to half-guard. I also showed a few attacks from mount to neutralize defenses.

I rolled with Jason & Ryan.

Sunday, May 14, 2017

SATURDAY, 13 MAY 2017

Today's class had me, Nick, Jason, John, Tommy, and a "let's try this out" participant named Emily.

I went over two closed-guard openings, the basic smash pass, the X-pass, and two basic mount escapes (bridging and frame escapes). I then had the students roll.

Thanks to Jason for training with Emily during her first class.

Monday, May 8, 2017

SATURDAY, 6 MAY 2017

Saturday's class consisted of me, John, Ryan, Tommy, Jordon, and a newcomer named Andy.

The main instruction of the day was the X-pass series, which I broadened to include a defense against X-guard implementation and a pass in case the X-guard is achieved.

We then rolled for 30 minutes or so (Andy chose to sit out to see how we practice).

Since AFR had promotions set for 10:30 a.m., we did not stay too long after 10 a.m., though a class enquiry was made by an outside individual who was there for the promotion ceremony.

Monday, April 17, 2017

SATURDAY, 15 APRIL 2017 (Evening)

It was just me and Jason practicing no-gi this evening. We spent 75 minutes on tie-ups, arm-drags, positioning, and a few live take-downs.

SATURDAY, 15 APRIL 2017 (Morning)

Today's class consisted of me, Nick, Jason, John, Ryan, and Rebecca. The techniques of the day were defenses and escapes from an opponent's lasso guard.

Sunday, April 2, 2017

SATURDAY, 1 APRIL 2017 (evening)

It was just me, Jason, and Ryan. I coached them through 90 minutes of no gi take downs and had them roll at the end.

Saturday, April 1, 2017

SATURDAY, 1 APRIL 2017 NAGA ORLANDO

TONY TAKES FIRST PLACE IN INTERMEDIATE NO GI AND SECOND IN BLUE BELT GI

SATURDAY, 1 APRIL 2017 (morning)

This morning's class had me, Nick, Jason, John, Jordon, and Rebecca (for like 25 minutes).

I went over a sweep from half-guard, and idea if someone stops that sweep, and Nick taught a way to secure a back take from half-guard.

We then rolled for 30 minutes and pulled out the crash pad. We worked ippon seio-nage and then each person worked their favorite throw.

SATURDAY, 25 MARCH 2017

Several Wolfpack members from Sarasota made the trip to train with us today. Tony (black belt on my left), Sam (blue belt, standing), and an unnamed black belt (taking the picture) trained almost three hours with us.

Friday, March 24, 2017

SATURDAY, 18 MARCH 2017

We had a good morning class, with me, Jason, John, and (surprise, surprise) Ethan. I went over arm locks (arm bars, Americana, kimura) and we rolled for a bit.

In the evening for no gi, it was me, Nick, Ryan, Rebecca, and Ethan. Ethan attended the judo class put on by Greg, but he came over and rolled with us at the end since his attendance in judo gave them even numbers and allowed us no gi folks to stay even, too.

Monday, March 6, 2017

SATURDAY, 4 MARCH 2017

Today's practice was just me, Nick, and John. We had a round-robin live-rolling session for about 2 hours.

Monday, February 6, 2017

SATURDAY, 4 FEBRUARY 2017

This morning's class had me, Nick, Jason, Tommy, and Tommy's co-worker, Jordan. Up the middle knee-slides were the technique of the day, with three variations being shown.

In the evening, Jason, Ryan, Rebecca, and I worked on no-gi items.

RYAN'S PURPLE BELT PROMOTION

Saturday, 28 January 2017

Today's class had me, Nick, Jason, John, Ryan, Rebecca (until 9 a.m., that is), Tommy, and newcomer Nicole.

We went over the X-pass, knee-slide from blocked X-pass, and a return knee-slide.

More importantly, I promoted Ryan to purple belt.

Saturday, January 21, 2017

SATURDAY, 21 JANUARY 2017

This morning's class had me, Nick, Jason, John, and Tommy.

I started the class with rolling as a warm-up. We moved grip fighting and clinch work before moving to take downs on the crash pad. I worked on uchi mata and Jason worked on a single, with the caveat that we were working our techniques from the same position (who would get their technique first).

We moved to "basics" then, with two arm bars from guard. Free rolling followed, with me and Jason starting from standing.

Later that evening, Greg DiFranza's First Coast Kodokan Judo came out for a workout. Greg and four of his students took part of the floor while Jason, Ryan, and I worked wrestling/no-gi takedowns for 90 minutes.
