SATURDAY

21 JANUARY 2012

We had good turnouts at BJJ and judo. For BJJ, it was me, Nick, Jason, Ethan, Jacqui, and a guy named Paul that goes to school with Ethan. For judo, we added Greg (of course), Christy and Hari (sp?).

Paul is a high school wrestler who "does BJJ at the YMCA" with "A.J." I don't know A.J. Regardless, Paul tried some ill-advised submissions when I let him start in dominant positions on me. All in all, I spent a long time grappling with him (ass-whippings are free, but lessons cost money), and I even gave him a few pure wrestling matches just for fun. I taught him that using the elbows to "hit pressure points on the thighs" and open the guard does not work against someone with training.

TATER

FRIDAY, 6 JANUARY 2012 & SATURDAY, 7 JANUARY

Our Nebraska friend, Allen Tate, dropped in for a private lesson on Friday (David was the practice dummy) and attended the group class on Saturday. We worked the top (passes and submissions) from the half-guard, a few very basic sweeps from the spider guard, and positioning for side mount and kesa gatame.

Since it has been a full year since I have had the chance to "grade" Allen, I must say that I am pleased with his progress. He is now a one-stripe blue belt (last January he was a four-stripe white belt) and is a much lighter character due to fantastic weight loss. Of course there were some holes in his game, but mine has holes big enough to drive trucks through. I hope he learned a few pointers from me and can take them home to brutalize his fellows at Mid-America Martial Arts.

SMILEYS

5 JANUARY 2012

I invited myself into Smiley's gym to do judo with him today; a full report will follow later. My idea is to turn him into a BJJ/judo training partner so that I can get much better in both arts in a short period of time. He does, after all, own a BJJ/MMA gym and his job is martial arts. I am bringing Greg with me so Jim can see that I am decent, but I have a long way to go in order to compete with Greg.

The training went well. I had forgotten how hard judo is for beginners. I also forget that gripping is very tiring. We went over tai-otoshi and kumikata during today's class. Jim invited me back, so it must have gone well.

WEDNESDAY

4 JANUARY 2012

Today was the first BJJ practice of 2012. I went over five basic techniques from the spider guard (one spider recovery and four sweeps) and four basic ideas from the top position of half-guard (two pins, one pass, and one choke). The "base-crew" of Nick, David, Jason, and Ethan showed up, so I was pleased.

After practice, Nick asked me to be the best man in his wedding this December. I wholeheartedly accepted and look forward to his pending nuptuals with Jacqui.
